These tutorials cover the main theory topics covered in all of our music
courses. You can use these to help study for your theory quizzes and final
theory exam. All definitions are cross- indexed throughout the program.
You can navigate through the program in two ways:
- At the end of each unit you may move to the next unit, the previous unit or the main index.
- You may use the Index found on this page. It can be accessed at the end of each unit as "Main Index."

Most musical notation examples on this site can also be heard. You will need a MIDI player plug-in {QuickTime, RealAudio etc.} to hear these examples. They will take a few seconds to load and can be controlled by the MIDI player which will appear in a separate window. It is suggested that you reduce the player's window size to the minimum required. Examples which have a MIDI file attached to them will be marked with the orange MIDI symbol. NB. Make sure you "close" each MIDI player window after hearing the file. Not closing these windows could generate a large number of windows by the time you work your way through the units, and cause you to quickly run out of "memory!" |
There are some interactive demos, and animations, which will require that you have a "Shockwave" plug-in installed in your browser. The appropriate FREE plug- in may be found at "www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download". These links will be marked:
Currently these consist of selecting multiple choice answers from small boxes.
You can check your answer by clicking on the "the answer is!" links. These will produce the answer in the long window at the top of the program. Some answers and "Help" charts may be opened in a new window. You can resize this window by "grabbing" the lower right hand corner of the window.
