Assignment #3

Listen

2nd Movement.

 Identify

  • try to identify a 2nd theme.

  • try to identify Rhythmic Motifs

Discuss

A "complete sonata" (sonata-allegro form) is supposed to have a 2nd Theme. It is suggested by some that there is no 2nd Theme in the 2nd Movement of Mozart's 40th.

Listen carefully to the 2nd Movement for a 2nd Theme. Remember that while we usually think of melodies as themes, we can also have harmonic and rhythmic themes. The "Blues" is really based on a "Harmonic Theme." (12 Bar Blues Progression) A lot of current R'nB and Rap style music is based on Rhythmic Themes. (specific beat)

After considering this discuss whether you think the 2nd Movement has a 2nd Theme which is developed throughout the movement.
